Product Devsign Manager
Purpose:
To provide functional and operational leadership of the product design capability, reporting to the Chief Design Engineer. Along with Architecture, Engineering, Sustainability and BIM, to manage, lead and coordinate technology innovation and effective integration across the product portfolio.
To manage, lead and coordinate development of new products, continuous product improvement, project design and engineering integration and to manage a significant R&D budget for new product development.
Along with the Chief Design Engineer and Design Director, recruit and manage a high-performing product development team.
The role can be a key driving force for ambitious objectives and requires a willingness to work in a dynamic, challenging environment while setting an example for the future in vision, commitment and personal and professional behaviours.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Product portfolio development, management and engagement with scheme design teams and project managers on module integration.
- Clear and effective team management of both direct reports and of design team peers to achieve design on time, with simple buildable outcomes which are waste averse and which suit excellence and quality driven agendas.
- Product research and development considering architectural, structural, environmental, building services and lifecycle issues with technical ownership from design through to production.
- Effective integration with Directors of Design, Commercial and Production, plus supply chain, health and safety, procurement, and other key business disciplines.
- Product quality from design through to site application and legislative compliance.
- Delivery against the strategic vision, supporting operational businesses including Commercial where necessary, manufacturing, pre-construction, delivery and external design stakeholders.
- Product portfolio and specification, quality, change control, life-cycle technical ownership, compliance, component modelling, supporting both bid configuration, pre-contract award and manufacturing activities.
- Develop and maintain a network of external specialists, utilising as necessary to ensure products and systems are compliant, cost effective and relevant.
- Challenge and make recommendations for continuous product improvement and process development.
- Provide engineering analysis and detailing of components, structures and products.
- Digital library - development and authoring.
- Support manufacturing process with DfMA ownership for new and existing products.
- Create specifications, drawings and data.
- Fully engage with Heads of Architecture and BIM to achieve BIM Level 3 delivery.
- Help recruit and mentor relevant functional staff in the Product Design Team.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:
Qualifications
- Product Design Engineering or allied Manufacturing/ Mechanical Engineering degree, BEng, Meng, MSc
- Relevant academic and professional qualifications, Chartered status highly desirable (IMechE or IET).
Knowledge, and Experience
- Sound knowledge of legislative compliance and expert in technical development of new and existing products.
- Experience of leading in-house design teams with a strong awareness of accountability and delegation to meet business milestones.
- Maintenance of a network of external specialists and supply chain strategic relationship management.
- Commercially astute with an understanding of the supply chain margin tactics.
- Knowledge of modular architecture and off-site construction, the residential house-building sector and the relevant construction methodologies and associated codes/standards.
